Love Yourself – Your Life May Depend On It

This weekend I have been fortunate enough to attend the Hay House I Am Light Tour in Brisbane with Dr Wayne Dyer and Anita Moorjani. There were many beautiful and practical messages and takeaways from this conference and one I want to share with you today is from Anita Moorjani about Self-Love.

Anita Moorjani is an incredible woman who had terminal cancer 8 years ago and as all her organs shut down and she went into a coma, she went through a near-death experience that revealed to her the reason for her cancer and some of the true gifts of life. In her near-death experience she made the decision to return to her cancer-ravaged body to fulfil a higher purpose and within 5 weeks of that decision, there was no further trace of cancer in her body what so ever. A medical miracle.

One of the lessons Anita learnt through her experience was the critical importance of self-love. Truly being able to love yourself. This is a concept we hear often, one we rationally know we need to adopt. But rarely do we know what it really means and how we do it.

Anita talks about self-love as being your own best friend, your biggest supporter, being there for yourself no matter what. Self-love is about never letting yourself down, never apologising for yourself or criticising or judging who you are.

The enemy of self-love is allowing yourself to be a doormat, a people-pleaser, putting everyone else first to the detriment of your own health and well-being.

Anita also distinguishes between self-love and self-indulgence, the latter being buying gifts for yourself, having massages and manicures and spending time and money on yourself. An element of this may be important to you, but self-love is about how you treat yourself from the inside out, not the outside in.

With Anita’s precious words in my mind and my own experience with the many wonderful women I have worked with, here are my top 5 tips to help you love yourself:

  • Ask yourself this question every day –“What would I do if I did love myself?”
  • Only speak words of kindness, support and encouragement to yourself and about yourself
  • Stop complaining about, and criticising, any elements of yourself you’re not happy with. Instead, focus on gratitude for who you are and all you have achieved.
  • Forgive yourself. We have all made mistakes, all of us, without question. Let go of any blame, shame, regret or guilt. Give yourself a break.
  • Get to know YOU and get connected with who you are. Know what you love, what is important to you, allow your authenticity to shine through in everything you do.

In the words of Anita Moorjani – learn to love yourself, your life may depend on it.
