Where is the Best Place in the World to be A Mother?

As a mother the very least we want for our children is to protect them. To keep them safe and warm, give them food to eat and clothes to wear. The very basics that we can so often take for granted.

Yesterday I read stories and statistics from Save the Children’s State of the World’s Mothers 2014 Report. The countries at the bottom of the rankings are among the poorest in the world suffering conflict, natural disasters or both. The top of the table is dominated by European countries. Australia is in 9th position, tied with Belgium and is the highest ranking non-European country.

Living in the world’s 9th best place to be for a mother is something to be incredibly grateful for.

The Complete Mother’s Index is rated on 5 factors – Maternal Health; Children’s Well-Being; Educational Status; Economic Status and Political Status.

It didn’t surprise me to read that Australia is ranked number one in Educational Status, closely followed by New Zealand. What was disappointing was not even making the top 30 for Political Status, measured by the participation of women in national government. Why, when we have the most educated women in the world, do we have such low female participation in politics? But that’s a conversation for another piece.

I urge you to read the report, at least some of the stories. When I went to sleep last night I had an overwhelming appreciation for my warm comfortable bed. I felt like the luckiest person in the world to know my children are safe, with food to eat and clothes to wear. At that moment, nothing else in the world mattered.
